SDRs and Shooters: Lessons from Basketball

When I entered the sales world in 2016, I had no clue how much my cricketing background would resonate in my selling career. With a decade of experience in sales and sales development, I’ve discerned shared traits between top-performing sellers and athletes, mainly drawing inspiration from the powerhouse of the Golden State Warriors.

Chase of Excellence

We’re all familiar with the awe-inspiring tales of the Black Mamba and his relentless pursuit of excellence. Picture the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry, known for his tireless work ethic and dedication to refining his skills. Whether arriving for practice hours before a game or tirelessly perfecting his shots, Curry embodies the spirit of constant improvement, echoing the sentiment that complacency is not an option.

Top sellers often channel this same energy. Much like Curry’s quest for greatness on the court, top sellers aren’t content with a stellar month or quarter; they actively seek ways to elevate their performance, fully aware that being exceptional today doesn’t guarantee the same result tomorrow.

Focus on the Process

Reflecting on my first century as a cricketer at 11, I recall the thrill, the jumping, and the overwhelming joy. That night, my coach’s words resonated deeply: “Enjoy your night, celebrate like there’s no tomorrow because there isn’t. We get back to practice tomorrow, and you act as if this day had not happened.” After a triumphant game, Stephen Curry doesn’t rest on laurels either. The next day, he’s back on the court, embodying the commitment to the routine and the process, indifferent to the outcome.

In the dynamic world of the Golden State Warriors, practice sessions, strategic plays, and focusing on the journey rather than the result mirror the discipline in a seller’s life. Colleagues achieving remarkable numbers similarly share an unwavering commitment to improvement. A familiar hunger for overachievement and a dedication to continuous progress drives them.

Resilience in the Face of Setbacks

As Curry faces defeats, injuries, and setbacks, SDRs encounter rejection, lost deals, and challenging quarters. Klay Thompson’s journey back from injury is a testament to resilience in adversity. SDRs, too, must develop a resilient spirit, bouncing back from disappointments with a determination akin to Thompson’s return to the court.

Adaptability to Changing Conditions

Consider the Golden State Warriors navigating different playing conditions, opponents, and game strategies. Like this adaptability, SDRs operate in a dynamic sales environment where market conditions, buyer behaviors, and competition can shift rapidly. The ability to pivot and thrive amid these changes is a shared strength between the Warriors and SDRs.

Team Collaboration:

While individual brilliance is crucial, the Warriors and SDRs recognize the significance of teamwork. The Warriors’ championship runs are a testament to the synergy among teammates, and similarly, SDRs collaborate with sales teams, marketing, and other departments for collective organizational success. The harmonious coordination of a team contributes significantly to triumphs in both the basketball court and the sales arena.
